Sustainability has long been central to Much Asphalt’s vision. Since 2020, we’ve accelerated innovation in recycling, research, and low-carbon materials — reducing reliance on finite virgin resources and helping lower the carbon footprint of road construction.

Plant Consistency

Modern and regularly updated operating system software ensures product consistency across all Much Asphalt's 15 plants, enabling best practices and quality at all times.

Recycled Asphalt (RA)

Asphalt pavement is 100% recyclable, and Much Asphalt can incorporate 10% to over 50% recycled asphalt in new mixes—conserving petroleum and aggregate resources while reducing material costs.

Advanced Testing

World class testing equipment & expertise have put Much Asphalt’s laboratories in a class of their own. Our CenLab is the only fully SANAS-accredited bitumen & asphalt laboratory in South Africa.

Rubber Recycling

Our subsidiary Spraypave produces Extended Bitumen Rubber (EBR) with 18%–22% recycled tyre rubber, improving road durability, flexibility, & lifespan.

Low-Carbon Bitumen

Much Asphalt's partnership with USA-based Origin Materials creates a low-carbon bitumen with wood residues (since 2021).

Instant Bio-Bitumen

We are testing Instant Bio-Bitumen, a carbon-negative bitumen from natural hydrocarbon resins and waste cashew nut shells.

Glass Recycling

Working with the CSIR, we are currently trialling waste glass as a partial aggregate replacement in hot mix asphalt. A successful trial of asphalt containing bitumen with recycled glass was done at Strand Golf Course as part of pathway upgrades.

Plastic Reuse

Together with the CSIR, Much Asphalt is actively tackling the significant problem of waste plastics. Two trials focused on the proportion of non-recycled & non-recyclable waste plastic that can potentially be used as an aggregate & binder modifier in asphalt.

GB5 Trials

A successful trial of GB5, a new cost-effective & hard-wearing asphalt, has been completed in Durban. The project included both plant & paving trials and was delivered through a partnership between Much Asphalt, Aqua Transport & eThekwini Metro.

Lower Carbon Footprint

Using up to 50% recycled asphalt (RA) can reduce carbon footprint by up to 50% per tonne compared to a completely virgin mix.

Recycled Rubber

By blending recycled ground tyre rubber into our specialised heavy-duty asphalt mixes, we replace approx. 20% of the petroleum-based virgin bitumen binder.

Solar Power

22% of Much Asphalt’s operations, offices, & laboratories use solar power systems, reducing reliance on the grid & lowering overall energy demand.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Quality is monitored across the entire value chain. Every plant, including our mobile units, is equipped with a dedicated Quality Control Laboratory. Our process begins with stringent raw material selection and extends through weighbridge checks to best-practice placement and lifecycle maintenance.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Our “Together We Can” philosophy emphasizes shared responsibility between the manufacturer and the contractor. We support this through

  • Long-term Supply Agreements: Some spanning over 50 years.
  • Best Practice Workshops: Since 2006, we have provided technical and practical training for individuals, SMMEs, and government departments to ensure high-quality hand-laid asphalt standards.
  • SMME Support: We partner with financial service providers to assist qualifying SMMEs with cash flow and financial management advice.
